We just had our 3rd seminar this weekend - which was amazing! We - is a group of MFA graduates from Whitecliffe College - and we meet up twice a year to support each other, work together and get inspiration for our work. It's always amazing to meet up with like-minded people - but even better when you've spent 2 years of your life - on and off - with these people. Such a lovely bunch!! We have 2 seminars a year and every time we have a guest speaker - just to add a bit of fresh air to the group. This time it was Phil Dadson - and what an amazing guy. So humble and generous - yet so clever and sharp. The good thing with this seminar was that we've now kind of established what it is we want to get out of this group and how to get it to work. And we are all determined to go forward. So we've set ourselves a challenge - the April Challenge. Next seminar is going to have only one item on the agenda - to meet up with 1-3 pieces of new art - with the theme; In-fluhks. We are then going to spent the morning looking at what everybody has produced and try to find 'harmony' in how the work will connect - and then hopefully have some external feedback in the afternoon. Here's a few photos from the seminar: Finished the painting - yahooooo. It's called 'Self-talk' - as the colours somehow seems to remind me to 'talk nicely' to myself - to be positive in everything I do. I love this quote by Bob Proctor 'Don't be a victim of negative self-talk. Remember you are listening'..... how true is that!!
Had an amazing experience yesterday - the Arboria. (Built in 2015, Architects of Air’s 22nd luminarium - Arboria, is dedicated to the theme of ‘trees’). Was very lucky to be there while the sun was shining, which I'm sure means a lot when it comes to the colours. Trying to clean-up a bit - finishing off some paintings that I've never finished... which is not unusual... Sometimes I just cannot get a certain painting 'done' or finished - it keeps being 'wrong' and I keep re-working it.
The only thing to do - I've found it - is to leave it for a while and then do something completely different with that painting - just using whatever I've done as the background.. This painting is one of those 're-worked' pieces - which seems to come together now - so much that I actually really like it now. Still making subtle changes to it - but now it's fun because I actually like the painting now.... ;D Love spring with all the beautiful new flowers and wonderful colours. Took two big long walks during this weekend - and brought my camera. So inspiring - and it's just a matter of having enough time to turn all these photos into paintings :) Been in Europe for 6 weeks - so haven't done much art - besides photographs. You can find some of the photographs I use for inspiration under......'Inspiration' :D Always so good to get back into it - with lots of new ideas. So the biggest problem is finding the time to try out some of the new ideas. On top of that I'm trying out an idea with James Lawrence. James got a lot of smaller works on paper - and he was looking for a way to use all these works..... So I suggested he cut up some of the work and we started re-constructing and incorporating the paper works onto a canvas. So that's what we did today - de-constructed some of the work - which was fun :) And then we started re-constructing - just to see if it would work - and I think it will. I even like the pins with their round forms and beautiful shadows :) Next week we'll try it out on a canvas!
Here's the second finished painting... Looks very crinkly as it's not stretched - It's just being held up in the corners :) It's called 'Annoying little dots' and it's about 110 x 165 cm. And the hessian work - didn't photograph it - was so busy getting it dry and packed up, ready to go on the plane tomorrow.... But I've done these pieces before - calling them 'Travelling Paintings'. Below is a huge installation I did as my finishing piece at University - such a lot of fun :D I've had to work in our office for the last couple of months - we've been soooo busy - which is actually good, but not a lot of time for painting - or blogging.... But.. I've had lots of ideas, so once we get back from Europe, I should be ready to rock'n-roll again. And... I've finished off two of the three on-going paintings, so things are happening - just too busy to blog about it :) And I've got something else going on in the studio - will take some photos today. I'm working with hessian/jute which I haven't done for a long time. So I'm excited to see what it looks like after it's been drying for a few days... but I'll upload some photos over the next couple of days.
And next week I'm off to Europe and won't be back till late August - so lots of time for new ideas :) And I'm meeting up with my dealer gallery in Denmark while there, so still time for a bit of art... |
